Dec 28, 2017 I just purchased a mid 2009 macbook pro so I can use Apple products for all my computer needs and only use my dell laptop to program my digital ham radios. That being said, my new to me mid 2009 macbook pro is only supported to El Capitan, however i see there is a patch tool that can be used to make High Sierra install on it.
Check compatibility
You can upgrade to macOS Sierra from OS X Lion or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 8.8GB of available storage space.

Get connected
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.
Download macOS Sierra
For the strongest security and latest features, find out whether you can upgrade to macOS Catalina, the latest version of the Mac operating system.
If you still need macOS Sierra, use this link: Download macOS Sierra. A file named InstallOS.dmg will download to your Mac.
Install the macOS installer
Double-click the downloaded file to open a window showing its contents. Then double-click the file within, named InstallOS.pkg.

Begin installation
After installation of the installer is complete, open the Applications folder on your Mac, then double-click the file named Install macOS Sierra.

Allow installation to complete
Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.

- Some criticism was expressed about the rubber bottom of this model as it has been known to peel off. Apple has acknowledged the issue as a flaw and replaces the bottom for free, with or without a warranty.
- The Intel Core 2 Duo (P8600) 45 nm “Penryn” processor included two independent processor cores on a single silicon chip.
- Though Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, third-parties have determined that the model actually supports 8 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” and 16 GB of RAM running OS X 10.7.5 “Lion” or higher and the latest EFI update.
- The Magsafe power adapter of MacBooks has been known to fray, break, and stop working. Following a lawsuit, Apple replaces these adapters for US residents with affected adapters, purchased (or received as a gift) with computers or as an accessory.
- According to apple-history.com the MacBook’s graphics chipset used a portion of main memory as VRAM. Though reported as a 256 MB graphics system, the chipset actually used up to 272 MB of RAM.
- A single 3.5 mm jack could be used for analog or optical audio out, or analog audio in.
